Using tracking technology to locate endangered ʻuaʻu or Hawaiian Petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis) burrows

چکیده

The ʻuaʻu, or Hawaiian Petrel, Pterodroma sandwichensis, is an endangered seabird endemic to the Islands. Although its distribution on some of islands well documented, larger such as Hawaiʻi there are significant gaps. Previous work within Puʻu O ʻUmi Natural Area Reserve (NAR) strongly suggested that a breeding colony species was present, but active burrows had not been located making it difficult focus management actions. Searching for this nocturnal burrow-nesting particularly challenging in NAR, birds very rare, widely dispersed, and remote areas with dense vegetation topography. To locate burrows, we employed use tracking devices track adults back their burrows. Six data loggers (e-obs Bird Solar 10g) were attached transiting caught using lights 2018 2019. Overland locational then interrogated concentrated circling ground activity. This resulted several activity two different locations where tracked ended up transmitting from ground. Burrow searching teams deployed these Petrel burrow located. represents first ever documented NAR entirety Kohala Mountain. Management actions have since initiated protect defined by our data. Logistical methodological considerations inherent telemetry locating colonies discussed.

Millennial-scale isotope records from a wide-ranging predator show evidence of recent human impact to oceanic food webs.

Human exploitation of marine ecosystems is more recent in oceanic than near shore regions, yet our understanding of human impacts on oceanic food webs is comparatively poor. Few records of species that live beyond the continental shelves date back more than 60 y, and the sheer size of oceanic regions makes their food webs difficult to study, even in modern times. Here, we use stable carbon and ...

Radar Study of Seabirds and Bats on Windward Hawai ' i

Modified marine surveillance radar was used to study the presence/ absence, abundance, and flight activity of four nocturnal species: Hawaiian darkrumped petrel [Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis (Ridgeway)], Newell's shearwater [Puffinus auricularis newelli (Henshaw)], Band-rumped storm-petrel [Oceanodroma castro (Harcourt)), and Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus Sanborn & Crespo...

A burrowscope for examining petrel nests in burrows

This report describes the development and refinement of a burrowscope that is reliable and robust enough to withstand arduous field conditions crucial for obtaining accurate data on sooty shearwater (Puffinus griseus) burrow occupancy and breeding success. The burrowscope consists of a miniature camera and infra-red lights mounted on a three metre length of hose through which images are project...

Use of burrow entrance flaps to minimise interference to Chatham petrel (Pterodroma axillaris) chicks by broad-billed prions (Pachyptila vittata)

The Chatham petrel (Pterodroma axillaris) is an endangered species, restricted to. a single population on South East Island, Chatham Islands. The key threat to breeding success is loss of chicks as a result of interference by broad-billed prions (Pachyptila vittata) prospecting for burrows for their oncoming breeding season. The effectiveness in decreasing interference using an artificial burro...
